The AP preseason Top 25 landed Aug 17 and the Ducks are No. 2, ahead of Georgia and Notre Dame and behind only Ohio State. Fourteen voters put Oregon first. The program had never opened above No. 3 before, and it has never opened a season at No. 1, so this is the highest starting point in Oregon history. The schedule does not care: Ohio State, USC, Michigan and Washington are all ranked too.

2 in the AP Top 25, the highest preseason ranking in program history. The poll, released Aug 17, gave the Ducks 1,597 points and 14 first-place votes, behind Ohio State at 1,672 and 40. Oregon's previous best preseason start was No. 3, reached in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2024. Four teams on the 2026 schedule are ranked with them: No. 1 Ohio State, No. 14 USC, No. 16 Michigan and No. 17 Washington. Conflicting reports on Jordon Davison, and we are not going to resolve them for you.

Ducks Wire's Zachary Neel reported Aug 12, citing sources, that the sophomore running back suffered a fall camp injury expected to cost him 6-8 weeks, which would run into the regular season. Hours later running backs coach Ra'Shaad Samples was asked about it and did not confirm it: "I'm not sure what information was talked about or said, but I mean, I know that kid just practiced his butt off. You know, he had a really good day in practice today. He finished runs." Neel added there is optimism inside the program that Davison may miss less time than first feared, with more testing pending. On3 went further, reporting its sources dispute the severity outright. FishDuck reported the injury is to Davison's collarbone and could cost him the Sept 5 opener, which would mean re-injuring the clavicle he broke in the Orange Bowl, though no other outlet has confirmed the body part and Oregon has said nothing. Davison ran for 667 yards and 15 touchdowns as a true freshman and broke his clavicle in the Orange Bowl. Until Oregon says something on the record, we are not picking a side. Oregon's highest preseason ranking in the history of the poll.

The FWAA-NFF Super 16, released Aug 9 by the Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation, put the Ducks No. 2 behind Ohio State. Oregon's previous best in that poll was No. 4 in 2024. The AP preseason Top 25, the one most people mean by 'preseason ranking,' followed on Aug 17. Two Ducks cracked the top 11 of Bruce Feldman's Freaks List, the annual ranking of college football's best athletes by testing numbers and weight-room feats.

Defensive tackle A'Mauri Washington came in at No. 3. Linebacker Devon Jackson landed No. 11 and is the one worth stopping on: at 6-2 and 235 pounds he was clocked at 24 mph on GPS this offseason, which Feldman wrote is the fastest he has recorded in the history of the list, calling Jackson the fastest linebacker in college football. Oregon led the nation with five players on the Lombardi Award preseason watch list, announced Aug 11: tight end Jamari Johnson, center Iapani Laloulu, outside linebackers Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei, and defensive lineman A'Mauri Washington. Dante Moore was named to the Wuerffel Trophy list, which honors community service. Oregon has a new kicker, and his teammates named him before the staff did.

Redshirt sophomore Gage Hurych is taking over from Atticus Sappington, with special teams coordinator Joe Lorig saying he is "pretty confident" in him. The nickname arrived first: "They were calling him 'Ice Man' like the first week he was here," Lorig said. "He never really gets too high, never really gets too low. He's just always the same whether it's a missed kick or a made kick, and that mental piece is the hardest." Two injury updates from camp, both bad.

Asked about linebacker Brayden Platt after the sixth practice on Aug 11, Lanning said he "is going to be limited for a while with the injury that he felt in the spring" and that "he's going to be out for some time," without a timeline. Earlier, on Aug 6, Lanning was asked about receiver Dillon Gresham, who missed all of 2025 with a neck injury and has not practiced: "There's not really a clear indication that Dillon's going to be able to help us here in the future. He'll be a part of our team, but from a medical standpoint, I don't know if that's clear that he'd be able to." On the better side, Oregon took the field in full pads for the first time on Aug 11 on the new outdoor turf fields, with the first scrimmage set for Aug 15. 2 in the country. The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, released Aug 4, put the Ducks second behind Ohio State with 1,637 points and six first-place votes. Ohio State drew 38 firsts, Indiana 14, Georgia seven.
