The Heartbreak and Glory Index
Every season rated on two axes: how high the highs got and how much it hurt when it ended.
2025
Back-to-back 13 wins. Peach Bowl collapse.
Shut out Texas Tech 23-0 in the Orange Bowl. Then Indiana 56-22. Pick-six on the first play. We've now been outscored 97-43 in our last two CFP elimination games. The talent is there. The moment hasn't been.
2024
Big Ten champs. Beat Ohio State 32-31. Rose Bowl blowout.
Won the Big Ten in year one. Beat Ohio State 32-31 at Autzen on a last-second stand. Then lost 41-21 to the same team in the Rose Bowl. Same opponent, different result. That's Oregon football.
2019
Rose Bowl comeback. Herbert's farewell. Cristobal crying.
Down 14 in the 4th quarter vs Wisconsin. Won 28-27. Herbert's last game in green and yellow. Cristobal was in tears on the sideline. Pac-12 champs. 12-2.
2014
Mariota. Heisman. CFP title game. Zeke happened.
The peak. Mariota wins the Heisman. Beat FSU 59-20 in the semifinal. Then Ohio State's Ezekiel Elliott ran for 246 yards and 4 TDs. The highest high and lowest low in the same month.
2012
49.6 PPG. Chip Kelly's last ride. DAT and Barner.
The most fun Oregon team ever. Averaged 49.6 points per game. Chip's last season. Only loss: 17-14 OT at Stanford. De'Anthony Thomas was the fastest human alive.
2010
12-0. BCS title game. Lost to Cam Newton by 3.
The closest we have ever been. Undefeated regular season. Lost 22-19 to Auburn. Three points from everything. Cam Newton was superhuman. Three points from a national championship.
2009
USC Halloween. Supwitchugirl. Chip Kelly arrives.
47-20 over #3 USC at Autzen on Halloween night. The game that launched a brand. Kelly's first year. The vibes were immaculate.
2007
Dennis Dixon tears his ACL. Title dream dies in Arizona.
This is the one that haunts the most. We were #2 with a Heisman frontrunner and it ended on an injury. Football is cruel.
2001
Captain Comeback. Joey Harrington. Fiesta Bowl champs.
The year Oregon became a national program. 11-1, Fiesta Bowl win over Colorado, finished #2. We proved we belonged.
1994
The Pick. Rose Bowl. Modern Oregon football begins.
Kenny Wheaton. 97 yards. First Pac-10 title ever. Rose Bowl for the first time since 1957. Lost to Penn State 38-20 but it didn't matter. Everything that came after started right here.
