The short answer. Oregon is 4-3 and 2-2 in the Big Ten after the 21-10 loss at Illinois on Oct 24, 2026. Three losses, to Oklahoma State, UCLA and Illinois, came from the same problem: the offense could not finish drives, and the quarterback could not stay on the field. The defense is the reason the season is not worse. The coaching staff has already made its first hard call of the year. The next call is the one that decides 2027.

The record, and what it hides

The season's results are in one table. Oregon beat Boise State 34-27, Portland State 84-0, USC 41-27 and Nebraska 17-14. It lost to Oklahoma State 31-39, UCLA 15-17 and Illinois 10-21. The wins look fine on paper. The losses share a pattern, and the pattern is the story.

Our opinion: 84-0 against Portland State tells you what the talent can do. The three losses tell you what it could not do, and that is the part the season will be judged on.

The quarterback, and the injury

Dante Moore started Oregon's first four games and was the reason the offense was good. He was hurt at USC on Sept 26, and the injury tracker still lists him out with no return date. Our 2026 stat line for his four starts is 69 of 99 for 926 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions, from the official box scores. After him, the position fell to Dylan Raiola.

Raiola's first game as the starter, against UCLA, ended with seven turnovers, five of them lost fumbles and two interceptions (Oregon Athletics UCLA recap, Oct 10, 2026). Against Illinois he went 27 of 41 for 246 yards with no touchdown and no interception, and he fumbled twice and lost one (Fox Sports box score, Oct 24, 2026). Those are not the same player, and they are not the same offense.

Our opinion: the quarterback was the single biggest difference between the first four games and the last three. A team that depends on one quarterback is one injury from a bad season. We are living that now.

The offense that could not finish

The program's final score post after Illinois, with the Northwestern kickoff time it gave.

The Illinois box score tells the whole problem in one line. Oregon gained 426 yards and scored 10 points. It went 4 of 15 on third down, and it missed three field goals, from 52, 53 and 47 yards (Fox Sports box score, Oct 24, 2026). Yards without points is a finishing problem, and finishing is a coaching problem as much as a talent problem.

The same pattern showed up at UCLA. Oregon went 1 of 12 on third down that day and ran for 73 yards (Oregon Athletics UCLA recap). Two losses, two third-down collapses, one offense.

The play-calling

On Sunday morning Oregon announced that Drew Mehringer had been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. Dan Lanning said: "This was a decision I felt was in the best interest of our football program, as I believe a new direction is necessary to move our offense forward" (Oregon Athletics, Oct 25, 2026). No interim play-caller was named.

Dan Lanning postgame after UCLA, Oct 10, 2026 (GoDucks)

Our opinion: that call was overdue, and it is the right kind of call. The offense did not finish drives, and the play-calling is the part of the offense a coordinator controls most. Lanning is not on the hot seat in our view. He has been loyal to this staff for a long time, and that loyalty is what made the decision late. We respect the loyalty, and we also think the decision should have come sooner.

The offensive line

The record of who has played on the line this season shows the line changing too often for the quarterback to trust it. That is the coaching question for the next offensive staff: whether a line can be built to hold for a full season, or whether it has to be rebuilt in the portal. We have not published line names here until the starters log is fully verified.

Receivers and depth

At Illinois, Evan Stewart, Jeremiah McClellan, Jalen Lott and Messiah Hampton were all out on the Oct 24 availability report (Oregon Athletics participation list). The receivers who played caught what they could: Dakorien Moore had 9 catches for 70 yards on 14 targets, and Jamari Johnson had 7 for 69 (Fox Sports box score).

Our opinion: the depth is the failure. When four receivers are out in one game, the offense has nowhere to go, and that is a roster-building failure as much as an injury.

The defense that kept us in games

This is the good news in the box score. Teitum Tuioti had 8 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a tackle for loss at Illinois. Koi Perich had 6 solo tackles and a tackle for loss (Fox Sports box score, Oct 24, 2026). The defense is why three of the seven games were close enough to win. It is also what makes 2027 possible.

The roster and the depth chart show where that unit's players are listed and who is behind them. Keep the core of that unit when the portal opens.

Culture, and what we protect

Evan Stewart was arrested on a complaint of driving under the influence on Oct 18, 2026, according to jail and police information reported by KATU and OPB. Lanning said the incident did not meet the program's standard and is being handled internally. No discipline has been announced in our sources. An arrest is an allegation, not a conviction, and nothing here should be read as more than that.

Our opinion: culture is not a slogan. It is whether the people in the building are held to the standard when it costs them something. The release shows the program made one such call on Sunday. The 2027 plan has to make more of them.

Where the hope is

We still believe in this team. The defense has players who make plays, the wins were real, and the 84-0 game showed what this roster can do when the offense gets out of its own way. The hope is not that the season gets better. It is that the next offensive coordinator, the next quarterback and the next offensive line are chosen for production, and that the portal is used to fill the holes the 2026 season exposed.

The 2027 plan lays out what that looks like, and the injury tracker is the place to watch for the quarterback's status. If the calls get made, this season is the reason the next one is better.
