Oklahoma State 39, Oregon 31

Shocked. Embarrassed. Humiliated. Pick whichever one fits and none of them is too strong, because Oregon lost outright in Stillwater as a 24 and a half point favorite, to a team that had not beaten an FBS opponent in twenty-one tries. Start with the credit. Drew Mestemaker was magnificent. The North Texas transfer threw for 317, ran for a career-high 109, had a hand in three touchdowns and scored the game winner himself on a run Oregon had a dozen chances to stop and did not. He is the first Oklahoma State quarterback with 300 passing and 100 rushing in the same game since Spencer Sanders did it to Notre Dame in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl, and the Associated Press made him its national player of the week for it. He was the best player on the field by a distance. That happens. Everything else is not supposed to. The excuses were all sitting right there and not one of them holds. Humidity. Heat. Lightning that pushed a 9:00 a.m. Pacific kickoff back ninety minutes and left everyone standing around. Oregon had known that kickoff time since the Big Ten released it on May 27 and flew to Stillwater on Thursday instead of Friday specifically because of it, and Lanning said so on the record the week before. Then the Ducks were outgained 554 yards to 281 and lost the first-down count 25 to 12. Nobody gets outgained by 273 yards because of the weather. And it was nearly everywhere. The offense failed, the defense failed, and the sideline did too. Dante Moore went 14 of 29 for 191 and never found a rhythm. The offense gained eleven total yards across its last three possessions after Oklahoma State retook the lead at 36-31, which is not a cold stretch, it is a unit with no answer. Wyatt Young caught five balls for 121, better than twenty-four yards a catch, and Oregon's coverage looked a step behind all afternoon. Which defenders were responsible for what is not something a box score can tell you, and we have not seen the All-22. Oregon went for it on fourth and eight from its own 33 with under seven minutes left, did not get it, and handed over the field goal that made it a two-score game. Afterward Eric Morris said his staff had picked up a tell in Moore's pre-snap stance and knew what was coming. Season that with however much salt you like; it is still a thing an opposing coach felt comfortable saying out loud. One unit is exempt, and it deserves saying: the kicking game was fine. Gage Hurych made from 41 and 42 and Bailey Ettridge dropped a 51-yard punt at the 10. When the specialists are the only group you can defend, that is its own indictment. That is the whole thing. Outplayed at nearly every position, and in our opinion outcoached as well, by a roster nobody would trade for ours. A team that had been No. 2 in the country a month earlier looked completely lost, and pretending otherwise would insult anybody who sat through it.

The play: Drew Mestemaker's go-ahead touchdown run, after Oregon had gone ahead 31-30. He finished with 317 passing, a career-high 109 rushing and a hand in three scores, and was named AP national player of the week.

The takeaway: Oregon lost by eight as a 24.5-point favorite and was outgained by 273 yards. There is no single unit to blame, which is the worrying part: offense, defense and the sideline all came up short on the same afternoon. Yahoo Sports called it prove-it mode and questioned the team's toughness. That was fair until the Ducks answered it, which they did two weeks later: 41-27 over a 4-0 USC side in the Coliseum, with their backup quarterback.
