The 2010 Season
Oregon went 12-0 in the regular season. LaMichael James rushed for 1,731 yards and was the Doak Walker Award winner as the nation's best running back. The offense averaged over 44 points per game under Chip Kelly. James was the centerpiece: the back who could hit the hole before the defense even recognized the play was coming. The speed of Kelly's offense was built around James's speed.
The Championship Game
BCS National Championship, January 10, 2011. Oregon vs Auburn. Cam Newton vs the fastest offense in the country. James was held to about 50 rushing yards on 14 carries but caught 4 passes for 39 yards and scored 2 receiving touchdowns. Auburn won 22-19 on a last-second field goal. Three points from a national championship. Cam Newton was superhuman.
The Chip Kelly System
James was the ideal Chip Kelly running back: fast, decisive, and willing to take the ball 25+ times a game at warp speed. Kelly's offense operated at a tempo that exhausted defenses physically and mentally. James thrived in it. He also shared a backfield with Kenjon Barner and De'Anthony Thomas, which meant defenses could never load up on him alone. But he was the primary weapon, the one they ran to when they needed yards.
Legacy
James is ranked #1 among all running backs in Oregon history. His 2010 season is the single best rushing season in program history. He was drafted #61 overall by the 49ers. His NFL career was short, but his Oregon career was legendary. When fans talk about the peak of Oregon football, they are talking about LaMichael James running through the Chip Kelly offense.
