The Dominance
Ngata was a force of nature on the interior. At 6-4, 340 pounds, he combined size with athleticism that defensive tackles are not supposed to have. He disrupted every aspect of opposing offenses: the run game, the passing lanes, the pocket. He played at Oregon during the pre-Chip Kelly era, when the Ducks were good but not yet great. Ngata was great regardless of the team around him.
NFL Career
Drafted #12 overall by Baltimore in 2006. Five Pro Bowl selections. He was a key part of the Ravens' Super Bowl XLVII championship team that beat the San Francisco 49ers. He played 13 seasons in the NFL across stints with the Ravens, Lions, and Eagles. His NFL career validated what Oregon fans already knew: Ngata was a generational talent.
Legacy
Ngata is ranked #1 among all defensive linemen in Oregon history. He set the standard that Buckner, Thibodeaux, Armstead, and the current defensive line all chase. In an era when Oregon was known primarily for offense, Ngata was proof that the program could produce elite defensive talent too. Every defensive recruit who comes to Oregon walks in the shadow of what Ngata built.
