So you’re telling me there’s a chance.

One game at a time, starting with Ohio State. The committee put Oregon No. 23 in its first College Football Playoff rankings on Nov 3. Beat the Buckeyes, win out, get some help, and the Ducks could still play their way in.

The first rankings

The College Football Playoff committee ranked Oregon No. 23 on Tuesday night, Nov 3, with Ohio State at No. 12 and USC, the team Oregon beat 41-27, at No. 20. The AP and Coaches polls both left the Ducks out on Nov 1. The committee’s list is the one that sets the field (College Football Playoff, Nov 3, 2026). All the rankings →

What winning out looks like

Four games, all Big Ten: at Ohio State, Michigan, at Michigan State, Washington. Win them and Oregon finishes 9-3 and 7-2 in the conference. The Big Ten title game takes the top two by conference record, and after Oct 31 UCLA is 5-0, Indiana is 5-1 and Ohio State is 4-1, against Oregon’s 3-2 (standings). Sports Illustrated’s Lily Crane says Oregon likely needs UCLA to win out, Illinois to lose again and Indiana to drop another game, that a loss Saturday would all but end it, and that winning the Big Ten title would secure a berth. ESPN’s Rece Davis: “if they win out, it’s not crazy to think that they can get into the Big Ten Championship game and win the conference” (as quoted by Sports Illustrated, Nov 2026).

Our opinion

It is a long shot and it takes help, and we are taking it anyway. Ten days after losing at Illinois, this team has a new play-caller, a ranked win and a pulse. None of the rest matters without Saturday: 12:30 PM PT on CBS in Columbus, with Ryan Day starting freshman Luke Fahey again and Ohio State a 7.5-point favorite (FanDuel via Sports Illustrated, Nov 2, 2026). A new call sheet.

Through seven games the story was yards without points: 426 yards at Illinois, 10 on the board. Then Oregon changed its play-caller and scored 34 on No. 20 Northwestern, with Dylan Raiola throwing for 336. A season that was supposed to be about a young quarterback and the deepest roster in the Big Ten is, at 5-3, about whether one good afternoon was the start of something.

Working: Raiola to Dakorien Moore (7 catches, 128 yards, two touchdowns), Brandon Smith (82 yards, the team high, against Northwestern), Teitum Tuioti (2.5 sacks at Illinois) and Jamari Johnson as a reliable target. Still open: who carries it with Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill Jr. banged up, and a receiver room waiting on Jeremiah McClellan and Messiah Hampton.

Settled on Oct 26: Dante Moore will not play again this season (see the injury tracker), and Jay Johnson leads the play-calling after Oregon relieved Drew Mehringer of his duties (Lanning, as quoted by ESPN, Oct 26, 2026). Our read: Illinois all but ended the playoff conversation, and then the committee put Oregon No. 23 on Nov 3. It takes winning out and it takes help. Anything can happen in Columbus.

The next honest answer is at Ohio State on Nov 7.

As of November 3, 2026, 8 games in. Sources: Oregon Athletics official box scores (Oct 17, Oct 24 and Oct 31, 2026); ESPN play-by-play (Oct 24 and Oct 31, 2026); College Football Playoff rankings (Nov 3, 2026); Oregon Athletics release on Mehringer (Oct 25, 2026)

What the First Six Games Said

In August the case made itself: back-to-back CFP appearances, a Big Ten title in year one, 48-8 under Lanning. Then Stillwater took the benefit of the doubt: 39-31 to an Oklahoma State team that had not beaten an FBS opponent in 21 tries. The Coliseum gave some of it back. Then UCLA came to Autzen and Oregon gave it away seven times in a 17-15 loss. Then Nebraska came in and Oregon won it ugly, 17-14, on a touchdown with 28 seconds left. Through six games, on Oct 17: two losses by a combined ten points, out of the AP Top 25, and six Big Ten games still ahead. Below is what six games answered, and what they did not.

7 Turnovers Oregon committed against UCLA on Oct 10: five lost fumbles and two interceptions, in a two-point loss. Oregon went 1 of 12 on third down and ran for 73 yards. The defense took the ball away three times, blocked a field goal and held UCLA to 17. Nothing in that box score says this team is not good enough. Almost all of it says it beat itself. Sources: ESPN box score; Oregon official box score (Oct 10, 2026).
Unranked Where Oregon sits in the AP Top 25 for Week 7 (Oct 11, 2026), after opening the season at No. 2. It was No. 25 in that week's Coaches Poll, and after the Illinois loss it was out of both polls in Week 9 (Oct 25, 2026). The way back runs through the schedule. Oregon beat No. 19 USC on the road on Sept 26 and No. 20 Northwestern at Autzen on Oct 31, and the same night USC beat No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 (ESPN box scores, Oct 31, 2026). Next is Ohio State in Columbus on Nov 7. Sources: AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll, Week 7 (via ESPN, Oct 11, 2026) and Week 9 (via ESPN, Oct 25, 2026); ESPN box scores (Oct 31, 2026). Both polls →
11 → 124 Yards on Oregon's last three possessions at Oklahoma State, against yards on its two possessions after USC tied the game 27-27. Both of those ended in touchdowns. Sources: ESPN play-by-play, Sept 12 and Sept 26, 2026.
504 Oregon's total yards at USC with its backup quarterback for most of the night, 270 of them after halftime, and no turnovers. It gained 281 at Oklahoma State. Still open: the defense gave up 446 at USC. Source: ESPN box scores.
554-281 Oklahoma State outgained Oregon by 273 yards on Sept 12 and won the first-down count 25 to 12. Oregon led 31-30 early in the fourth, fell behind 36-31 with 10:21 left and then gained 11 total yards on its next three possessions. The upset ended a 21-game FBS losing skid for the Cowboys, and Oregon's national title odds roughly halved, from about 9.1 percent to 4.8. Yahoo Sports called it prove-it mode and questioned the team's toughness. Those are other people's words. The numbers underneath them are ours to answer. Sources: ESPN box score and play-by-play (Sept 12, 2026); ESPN on the 21-game skid; Sports Illustrated on the title-odds move; Yahoo Sports column (Sept 2026).
53-11 Lanning's record at Oregon, a .828 win percentage. Back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances and a Big Ten title in the program's first year in the league.
3,565 Dante Moore's 2025 passing yards, with 30 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He turned down a projected top-of-the-draft slot to come back.
91 Oregon's overall rating in EA Sports College Football 27, the highest of any team in the game, ahead of Indiana and Ohio State at 90. The defense grades as the best unit in the game. Dante Moore is a 95, the top-rated quarterback in it, and he's on the cover. A video game is not a prediction, but it is a fair read on how much talent is in the building.
No. 3 Where the 2027 recruiting class sits nationally on the 247Sports Composite, with 25 commits, as of August 15, 2026, and unchanged when re-checked on Oct 11. First in the Big Ten. Stacked on top of a 2026 class that finished third and sent five five-stars to Eugene. Lanning is not borrowing this roster. He is building it.
97-43 Combined score of Oregon's last two CFP elimination losses (Rose Bowl 41-21 to Ohio State, Peach Bowl 56-22 to Indiana). The gap between 'very good' and 'champion' is defined by these two games.
7 Top-four finishes in the final AP poll since 2001: 2001 (#2), 2010 (#3), 2011 (#4), 2012 (#2), 2014 (#2), 2024 (#3), 2025 (#4). The gap between contender and champion keeps getting smaller. This roster might be the one that closes it.

Freshman receiver Messiah Hampton was arrested Friday, booked into the Lane County Jail and released the same evening.
Jail records list two felony counts of attempting to elude police and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving, from a two-vehicle police chase in Springfield at 3:51 a.m. on Oct 18, hours after the Nebraska game (The Oregonian and ESPN, Oct 31, 2026; CBS Sports reported one felony count). Springfield police say Hampton was identified as the driver of one vehicle and are still working to identify the other. These are charges, not a conviction, and Oregon had not commented as of Oct 31. Hampton was OUT on Friday’s and the game-day availability reports for Northwestern. Police have said Evan Stewart, arrested on suspicion of DUII the same morning with no charge filed as of Oct 23, and Jamari Johnson, cited for speeding that morning, are not suspects in the chase (ESPN; KATU, Oct 23, 2026).
