That was scary, and anybody telling you it wasn't is lying. Oregon came in No. 2, trailed at halftime, and was still tied at 27 with 7:51 on the clock. Here is the part nobody wants to say out loud: Boise State is good. Genuinely good. Three straight Mountain West titles before they jumped to the rebuilt Pac-12 this summer, and on Saturday Maddux Madsen threw three touchdown passes on a defense that is supposed to be the best in the country. Do not be shocked if those guys are playing in January. That is the excuse and the warning at the same time. What saved us was Dante Moore, 28 of 37 for 378 and three scores without a pick in his first start since telling the draft to wait, and Dakorien Moore getting behind the secondary for 62 yards to end it. Gage Hurych, who only won the kicking job in August, went two for two like it was never a question. We will take the 1-0. We are also going to be watching that secondary very closely in Stillwater.

The Case for 2026

Two straight CFP appearances. Big Ten champs in year one. 49-8 under Lanning. The pieces are here. Can this team actually finish? That's the only question left.

49-8 Lanning's record at Oregon, a .860 win percentage. Back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances and a Big Ten title in the program's first year in the league.
3,565 Dante Moore's 2025 passing yards, with 30 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He turned down a projected top-of-the-draft slot to come back. BetMGM had him fifth in the Heisman market at +1200 as of July 9, 2026, behind CJ Carr and Arch Manning.
91 Oregon's overall rating in EA Sports College Football 27, the highest of any team in the game, ahead of Indiana and Ohio State at 90. The defense grades as the best unit in the game. Dante Moore is a 95, the top-rated quarterback in it, and he's on the cover. A video game is not a prediction, but it is a fair read on how much talent is in the building.
No. 3 Where the 2027 recruiting class sits nationally on the 247Sports Composite, with 25 commits, as of August 15, 2026. First in the Big Ten. Stacked on top of a 2026 class that finished third and sent five five-stars to Eugene. Lanning is not borrowing this roster. He is building it.
97-43 Combined score of Oregon's last two CFP elimination losses (Rose Bowl 41-21 to Ohio State, Peach Bowl 56-22 to Indiana). The gap between 'very good' and 'champion' is defined by these two games.
7 Top-four finishes in the final AP poll since 2001: 2001 (#2), 2010 (#3), 2011 (#4), 2012 (#2), 2014 (#2), 2024 (#3), 2025 (#4). The gap between contender and champion keeps getting smaller. This roster might be the one that closes it.

Dig in: the 2026 schedule and what the gauntlet actually looks like, the roster and depth chart, Dan Lanning, and every BCS and CFP game Oregon has played.

Coaching
Oregon is flying to Stillwater on Thursday, a day earlier than a normal road trip, and the reason is the clock.
Lanning: 'We are going to travel on Thursday, and that's strictly because we're playing in a 9 a.m. game. So, when you're traveling multiple time zones and you're going to play early, I think there's an advantage to getting there a little bit earlier.' The Ducks keep their usual Thursday morning practice before wheels up. They carry a 12-game road winning streak into it, the longest in the country, and a win would be Lanning's 50th at Oregon. Shout plays between the third and fourth quarters at Autzen, an Animal House tribute filmed on this campus, and it is ours.
So when Boise State's players danced along at the start of the fourth with the game tied, and Oregon's stood there watching them do it, everybody in the building noticed. Spencer Danielson said afterwards it was not spontaneous: the Broncos had been playing the song at practice for fourth-quarter inspiration, and “what everybody saw today is what we've been doing for weeks now.” Dante Moore said afterwards that he heard it differently. “When we seen that, it was like, hey, you can't do that in our home. So we made sure that we go out here and capitalize and finish drives and put some points on the board.” Oregon scored the last 10 points of the game. The voters and the computers agreed about Oregon, and that is the part worth sitting with.
The AP poll dropped the Ducks four spots after the Boise State win. Bill Connelly's SP+, which is a predictive model rather than an opinion, dropped them five: Oregon was No. 2 at a 29.2 rating in the final preseason SP+ on Aug 13, with the top-rated offense in the country and the second-rated defense, and came out of Week 1 at No. 7 and 23.9, with the offense sixth and the defense twelfth. ESPN's FPI moved the same direction, cutting Oregon's playoff odds from 64.7 percent to 54.3. The case that the poll drop was voters overreacting to a scoreboard has a problem: the models watched the same game and moved further. Oregon's new punter averaged 48.
0 yards on three punts against Boise State and dropped all three inside the 20, and he took a long way to get there. Bailey Ettridge is 28, from Geelong in Australia, and was working as a construction worker using torches and plasma cutters before he started playing football two years ago. On taking the leap: 'It was either now or never.' Punting is the sort of thing nobody notices until it goes wrong, and in a game Oregon won by seven with a muffed punt on the ledger, three punts pinned inside the 20 mattered. Oregon fell from No.
2 to No. 6 in the first in-season AP Top 25, released Tuesday Sept 8 (Week 1 ran through Labor Day, so the poll came Tuesday rather than the usual Sunday). The Ducks drew 1,422 points and 3 first-place votes, down from 1,597 and 14 in the preseason poll. Ohio State is No. 1 with 1,684 points and 46 of the 69 first-place votes, followed by Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas and Indiana. The US LBM Coaches Poll moved Oregon the same four spots, to No. 6 with 1,524 points and one first-place vote. The cause is not in dispute: Oregon was a three-touchdown favorite, trailed Boise State by 10 in the first half and won 34-27, while Georgia and LSU won by 60 and 41 the same weekend. Lanning, asked about it: 'Ultimately, we just came out slow. Give credit to a good team, too. Boise (State) is a good team.' Three teams on Oregon's schedule are ranked in the Week 2 AP poll, one fewer than in the preseason.
Ohio State is No. 1 (Nov 7), USC No. 14 (Sept 26) and Washington No. 19 (Nov 28). Michigan, No. 16 in the preseason, fell out of the AP Top 25 entirely after a 13-12 win over Western Michigan that turned on a last-second Hail Mary. The two polls disagree about the Wolverines: the Coaches Poll still has Michigan at No. 24. Boise State, the team Oregon just beat, is the top vote-getter outside the AP Top 25 with 86 points. Two receiver updates from Lanning's game-week press conference on Monday Sept 7, and they go in opposite directions.
Jalen Lott, the five-star freshman who did not play in the opener, had 'a minor, you know, corrective surgery on his hand' and 'will be down just for a little bit.' That is the whole timeline on the record; nobody has given a return date. Iverson Hooks, the transfer who watched the opener in street clothes, 'kind of tweaked his hamstring in the middle of last week, so just wasn't able to go full strength,' and Lanning said 'think we'll have him back this week' at Oklahoma State. Worth holding onto: only four Oregon receivers played the whole way against Boise State. Source: Dan Lanning press conference (Sept 7, 2026) via The Register-Guard and Sports Illustrated (Sept 8, 2026).

Lanning backed Evan Stewart on punt return after the muffed punt that Boise State turned into a touchdown on the very next snap.
'I have all the belief in the world in Evan and the trust,' he said, then pointed at the officiating: 'We had some mistakes on special teams that showed up, obviously, the muffed punt. There were also some missed calls,' and 'That should have been a penalty. So I don't think you can lose sight of that.' The no-call was kick-catch interference, which is not reviewable. CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore agreed on the broadcast that it should have been flagged.
